What the checker looks at

  • Supplier details
  • Customer details
  • VAT numbers, validated against VIES where possible
  • Invoice numbering
  • Dates
  • Calculations: net, VAT and total
  • Reverse-charge indicators and wording
  • The seller's country's own requirements, where the national rule has been verified

If EUFactura cannot determine a rule confidently, it asks for review instead of silently marking the invoice as compliant.

Common questions

What does the EU invoice checker check?
It reads your invoice's key details — dates, VAT numbers, party information, the required baseline EU invoice fields — and independently recalculates the totals to confirm they add up. It then applies the seller's own country's checks: the customer's tax number where national law requires it, the national currency for the VAT amount, simplified-invoice ceilings, and the national e-invoicing or reporting regime that applies to the invoice.
How does the checker read my invoice?
Structured e-invoice XML is read directly — there's no ambiguity to resolve there. For a PDF, we read it two independent ways: deterministic text extraction, and an AI model looking at the actual page. That second read is also what lets scanned or photographed invoices work, not just clean digital PDFs. When both methods agree, we're more confident; when they disagree on something, we tell you exactly what to double-check rather than silently picking one.
What information should an EU VAT invoice contain?
At a baseline, EU rules (Council Directive 2006/112/EC, Article 226) call for things like a unique sequential invoice number, the issue date, the supplier's and (where relevant) customer's identity and VAT details, a description of what was supplied, the taxable amount, the VAT rate and amount, and any required special wording. Country rules can add to this.
What is a VAT number?
An EU VAT identification number is how a business is registered for VAT purposes — a 2-letter country prefix followed by up to 12 characters. This tool checks the format and, where possible, verifies it live against VIES, the EU's official VAT number registry.
What is reverse charge?
For certain cross-border B2B transactions within the EU, the seller doesn't charge VAT — the buyer accounts for it themselves under the reverse-charge mechanism. When this applies, the invoice needs to say so.
Does an invoice need a QR code in Spain?
It can, depending on the invoicing system used to issue it — Spain's SIF/VERI*FACTU regulation (Real Decreto 1007/2023) sets requirements for computerised invoicing systems, including a QR code in some cases. Whether it applies to a specific invoice depends on the system that issued it, which we can't always tell from the document alone — so we flag it for review rather than call it a pass or fail.
Can EUFactura check invoices from every EU country?
Yes. The EU baseline, VAT numbers and arithmetic are checked for any invoice, and the seller's Member State adds its own checks where we have verified the national rule against the law or the tax authority: the customer's tax number, the national currency for the VAT amount, the simplified-invoice ceiling, and national e-invoicing or reporting regimes such as SdI, KSeF, RO e-Factura, Peppol in Belgium, NAV Online Számla or VERI*FACTU. Where a national rule has not been verified yet (Cyprus, Czechia, Greece, Malta, Slovenia today), only the EU baseline runs, and the result says so.

This tool provides an automated, best-effort check against common EU and national invoicing requirements. It is not tax or legal advice, and passing these checks does not guarantee an invoice is legally valid or fully compliant — always confirm anything important with a qualified advisor.
